Air Force Sets Up Committee To Conduct Safety Audit On NAF Planes

Photo: [email protected]   The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, has constituted a committee to conduct a safety audit of all Nigerian Air Force operational and engineering units. This followed the plane crash in Kaduna State which killed eleven military officers, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru. A statement on Tuesday by NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, revealed that the committee comprised serving and retired senior officers of the force.

Ibrahim Attahiru, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and 10 others, among the finest in the Nigerian military. Other Army victims, in that air catastrophe, were Brig-Gen. Abdulkadir Kuliya (acting Chief of Army Intelligence), Brig-Gen. M. I. Abdulkadir (chief of staff to the late COAS), Brig-Gen. O. L. Olayinka (Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army), Major L. A. Hayat (aide-de-camp to the late COAS) and Major N. Hamza. The Air Force casualties were Flight-Lt. T. O. Asaniyi (pilot of the doomed aircraft, whose wedding was reportedly due in November), Flight-Lt. A. A. Olufade (co–pilot, who wedded only two months ago), Sergeant O. Adesina, Sergeant Umar and ACM O. M. Oyedepo (air crew members).

Attahiru and 10 other military officers were on board a military aircraft that crashed in Kaduna State on Friday, May 21, 2021. All the victims were buried at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja, on Saturday, May 22, but President Buhari skipped the ceremony despite only being minutes away, a decision that drew public criticism. The president described the late Attahiru as an outstanding soldier and an institution builder when he spoke on the phone to his wife on Sunday, May 23. He hailed the sacrifices of the deceased military men and the Armed Forces in general, noting that Nigerians will continue to appreciate and support their efforts.
