NM Boys Down EV on Senior Night
by RD Keep
NEW SHARON – North Mahaska celebrated its five seniors following its South Iowa Cedar League baseball contest with English Valleys Thursday. It was a fitting tribute as those five accounted for eight of North Mahaska’s 13 scored runs in a 13-3 victory.
North Mahaska hit the ball hard but held just a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning when the wheels fell off the English Valleys wagon. Twelve Warhawks came to the plate as they scored eight runs on six hits and two errors to gain an 11-1 lead.
Coming up short was the theme for the Lone Tree basketball teams on Thursday night when they dropped a pair of single-digit games with non-conference foe English Valleys.
The boys were forced to play catch up by digging themselves a 12-2 deficit after one and 26-14 at the break. Lone Tree chipped away in the second half with a 13-10 third and 18-14 fourth, but still finished up on the short end of a 50-45 final. The Bears’ (11-6) Kaden Hall finished with a game-high 23 points on nine of 15 shooting. Cade Patterson led the Lions with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Cade Shield added 14 points and Mitchell Koedam hauled in 12 boards.
They had to sweat it out, but Keota fans saw their boys’ basketball team squeak out a home South Iowa Cedar League matchup on Tuesday against English Valleys winning 66-63 in overtime.
The Eagles trailed by six at half, but a 17-9 third quarter set up a tight fourth and the game was tied 55 all at the end of regulation. Keota outscored the Bears 11-8 in the extra four minutes to get back in the win column. Kaden Hall was a tough Bear player to stop finishing with a game-high 35 points. Carson Sprouse led Keota with 18 points and nine rebounds. Bryce Greiner had 14 points off the bench, Luke Hammen added 12, and Wyatt Sieren created five steals. Keota improves to 12-1 and EV is 10-5.
