NM Boys Down EV on Senior Night by RD Keep NEW SHARON – North Mahaska celebrated its five seniors following its South Iowa Cedar League baseball contest with English Valleys Thursday. It was a fitting tribute as those five accounted for eight of North Mahaska’s 13 scored runs in a 13-3 victory. North Mahaska hit the ball hard but held just a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning when the wheels fell off the English Valleys wagon. Twelve Warhawks came to the plate as they scored eight runs on six hits and two errors to gain an 11-1 lead.

NM State Track Update DES MOINES – North Mahaska competed in individual events on the first day of the Class 1A state track meet on the Blue Oval at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Dylan Klinker ran in the 100 meters, Sean Knockel in the 400 meters and Grant Smith competed in the long jump. None of the events finished high enough to score team points. Klinker ran in a very competitive field and finished 17th in 17.61 seconds. English Valleys’ Beau Flander, who edged Klinker at the district meet, won the prelim in 17.15. Flander will advance to Saturday’s finals. Knockel placed 15th overall in the 400 in 52.25 seconds. Trevor Sauerbreit, who had the top time coming in, won the prelim in 50.1 and advances to Saturday’s final.

NM Track Teams Fifth at Newton North Mahaska Warhawks NEWTON ­– North Mahaska’s track teams traveled to Newton Thursday for a tune-up meet prior to next week’s state qualifier. Host Newton won both boys and girls. The boys won with 207 points and the girls tallied 206. Grant Smith and Addie Schilling powered NM to fifth place. The boys scored 77 and the girls 75. North Mahaska boys picked up a win in the 400-meter relay and scored three silver place finishes. Smith ran the second leg of the winning relay after Dylan Klinker led off. Matthew Goemaat and Sean Knockel finished the run in 45.75 seconds. Klinker picked up second in the 100 meters in 11.69. Smith picked up eight more points in earning second in the long jump with a leap of 19-feet.

NM Students Perform “High School Musical” This Weekend Gabriella (Emily Sampson) and Troy (Matthew Goemaat) bring Disney’s “High School Musical” to the North Mahaska High School Auditorium this weekend. The production will be performed Friday and Saturday, March 12-13 at 6:30 p.m. (submitted photo) North Mahaska High School students will take to the stage this weekend a year after the show was first cast. NM will present Disney’s “High School Musical, Junior” under the direction of Tara Carrico and Jenna Hibler. Released by the Disney company in January 2006, the story is a bit of a Romeo and Juliet story pitting fine arts against basketball. Troy (Matthew Goemaat) and Gabriella (Emily Sampson) meet at a karaoke night during winter break. Both are talented singers but Troy is also the star on the basketball team. Gabriella is a transfer student who has a strong background in math and science.
