Smiths wife, shana witt, was convicted in august of suffocating the boy with a stuffed animal. When she returned to her bedroom to tell smith what she had done, the two had sex and smith later fixed lunch. During that time smith says he never checked on his son. Smith i thought she was lying to me that morning. Randy krantz you didnt believe her . Smith no. When smith finally realized his son was dead, he still didnt call for help. Instead he says his wife insisted he clean up her meth lab. He then called 911 and told dispatchers that his son had just stopped breathing when in fact the child had been dead for hours. After being arrested prosecutors say smith fully cooperated in building a case against his wife, who received 52 years in prison for murdering her son. While smith wasnt involved in the murder, he received a fouryear sentence tuesday on drug and child abuse charges. Randy krantz we did feel very strongly that mr. Rocky mounts assistant town manager Matthew Hankins says an autopsy result will determine what happens next. The patient is still hospitlized as i understand it, there have been no charges placed at this point. But if the death could have been prevented, hankins says there are other options for expecting mothers. All it takes is reaching out. There are churches and other individuals that can help in this sort of circumstance. If it does turn out that there was something more at play, hope its not the case. Over the next three years, the study will look into ways to keep the city safe during storms and high tides. This could open doors for more funds in the battle against floods. Tonight flooding from the rising Roanoke River has shut down a bridge in salem. Mill lane near West Riverside drive is closed. And water is washing up onto the bridge. Police have set up a detour. And lick run creek in roanoke is continuing to rise as well. Rising waters from the creek have flooded the lick run greenway before at Brown Robertson park. The greenway has not flooded yet but the waters still remain high. And even thought flooding will be a concern for the next few days there is an immediate threat.
