The demands by some opposition parties to let a joint parliamentary committee investigate the Adani group-Hindenburg Research row "is only to embarrass the government", senior lawyer Harish Salve told NDTV today.
A status report, in a ‘sealed cover,’ is expected to be submitted by the committee in two months. Its remit is to examine the regulatory framework, with a view to protect investors, strengthen investor awareness and look at contravention of law, if any, by the Adani Group.
Having turned down the Union Government's suggestion that the Hindenburg-Adani row be probed by a panel of experts suggested by the Narendra Modi government, the Supreme Court has now set up an expert panel.
While ordering the probe into Hindenburg allegations, the apex court noted that it appears that SEBI is seized of the investigation into the allegations made against the Adani Group companies and sought a status report from it on its ongoing investigation into the matter within two months.
