Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered that the cases against the political leaders be withdrawn based on the recommendations in the Justice Aruna Jegadeesan’s commission’s interim report, according to a government release.

Most cases against anti-Sterlite protesters to be withdrawn

Stalin on Friday ordered the withdrawal of most of the cases filed against anti-Sterlite protesters and to provide no-objection certificates to those arrested during the protests to pursue higher education and employment opportunities. The government, in an official release, said it has accepted the recommendations made in the interim report of the retired Justice Aruna Jegadeesan committee submitted to it on May 14. Based on the recommendations of the Committee, the government will also provide a compensation of ₹1 lakh each to 93 persons who were arrested by the police and suffered injuries and mental agony. One more person was arrested in a different case died in prison. The government will provide a compensation of ₹2 lakh to his 72-year old mother, the government said.

This is the second time the commission summons Rajinikanth for an inquiry. Rajinikanth made a controversial statement about the police opening fire at anti-Sterlite protesters when he came to visit the victims during May 2018. He claimed anti-social elements had intruded into the protest. The commission headed by retired Justice Aruna Jegadeesan had earlier summoned the actor in February this year, but the actor sought an exemption stating his arrival to Thoothukudi would create a law and order problem.
