Kin of police firing victims get jobs Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday ordered the withdrawal of most of the cases filed against anti-Sterlite protesters. He also handed over appointment orders to the kin of 17 persons who were killed or severely wounded in the Thoothukudi police firing incident in May 2018. The appointment orders were based on the educational qualifications of the beneficiaries. The Chief Minister also ordered the provision of no-objection certificates to those arrested during the protests to enable them to pursue higher education and employment. An official release said the government accepted the recommendations made in the interim report of the Aruna Jegadeesan Committee. The report was submitted on May 14. The committee had recommended that needless cases filed against the protesters be withdrawn. It is to be noted that actor Rajinikanth was summoned to appear for the inquiry on January 19. In connection to the police firing that claimed lives of 14 anti-Sterlite protesters, the commission has been quizzing witnesses, victims, relatives of deceased, public, revenue officials, police and others. The commission had summoned 57 persons, including TkMCH dean, doctors, 108 ambulance operators and fire and service personnel for inquiry.

This is the second time the commission summons Rajinikanth for an inquiry. Rajinikanth made a controversial statement about the police opening fire at anti-Sterlite protesters when he came to visit the victims during May 2018. He claimed anti-social elements had intruded into the protest. The commission headed by retired Justice Aruna Jegadeesan had earlier summoned the actor in February this year, but the actor sought an exemption stating his arrival to Thoothukudi would create a law and order problem.
