ON a visit to Kendal’s twin town Rinteln some years ago a German friend who was showing me around indicated a statue of Kaiser Wilhelm 1 and he said whenever he returned to the area it was seeing the monument on a hill that made him realise he was home again. Which local landmarks or characteristics about the place where we live give us a real sense of belonging? Over the years when I have returned to Kendal from other parts of the country or from abroad it is the sight of Farleton Knott, rising above me to my right as I drive along the M6, that makes me feel I am back home.

A GIRLGUIDING leader has been deemed a worthy recipient after receiving an award. Lauren Boow was presented with the High Sheriff Girlguiding Cumbria South Shield award by High Sheriff Julie Barton. Mrs Barton said: Congratulations to this year’s worthy recipient. Lauren has been outstanding in her creative hard work with Crosscrake Rainbows, Brownies and Guides. Her engaging zoom meetings are a real highlight. She has also planned and delivered large events at county level and taken on the shared role of Division Commissioner for Kent Lune Division.

On November 11th, 1941 Richard was born to Ray Barton and Grace Baker in Albuquerque New Mexico. Richard grew up on the family ranch in Dunlap, New Mexico and graduated from Fort Sumner High school where he excelled in playing football, basketball and running track for the Foxes. From there he attended NMMI in Roswell to play football on a scholarship and then from NMMI he continued his football career at Western Colorado University in Gunnison Colorado where he graduated from college with his bachelors degree.
