Massachusetts Will Fully Reopen May 29

Massachusetts will be fully reopened just in time for Memorial Day weekend, Governor Charles D. Baker Jr. announced this week. Masks will no longer be required, gathering limits will no longer be in place and all businesses will be able to open at full capacity with no pandemic restrictions in place. By the middle of June, the State of Emergency will be lifted. In light of this, several stores have announced that customers will not be required to mask up in their buildings, including Stop & Shop. While the restrictions are being completely lifted by Saturday, May 29, local officials ask that residents consider keeping a mask handy in the event that some businesses continue to require them. State Senator Julian A. Cyr (D-Truro) and Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Wendy K. Northcross said many businesses, residents and tourists will still be navigating the pandemic throughout the summer.

Walk-In Vaccinations Increasingly Available

With Massachusetts on track to reach its target goal of 4.1 million people fully vaccinated by the beginning of June, the state will begin to reallocate its resources, Governor Charles D. Baker Jr. said at a press conference Monday morning, May 3. The “harder-to-reach populations” will now be the target for the commonwealth. “At this point, we’re adjusting our vaccine distribution strategy to be more targeted and will shift vaccines to smaller-scale operations that can focus on particular communities or particular populations,” Gov. Baker said. These smaller-scale operations will include more doses for 22 regional collaborations, doubled allocation for the 20 most impacted communities and an increase in the number of mobile vaccination clinics.

As COVID-19 Numbers Continue To Climb, Cape Cod Braces For Banner Tourist Season

Despite a recent third wave of COVID-19 cases, tourists are gearing up to hit Cape Cod beaches this coming summer. Officials said hotels are already filling up for summer vacations and local businesses are scrambling to hire staff before then. With the influx in tourism on the horizon, officials are also working to vaccinate as many residents as possible. This includes nearly all homebound residents being vaccinated through their local boards of health and councils on aging. Speeding up vaccinations is timely, as contagious variants of the virus are spreading quickly in the county. Cape Cod is a state hot spot for a variant first discovered in Brazil.

Cape Experiencing Mountainous COVID-19 Spike

Health officials on Cape Cod are continuing to monitor a jump in COVID-19 cases in several towns. The outbreak started on the Mid-Cape and has now spread to parts of the Upper and Lower Cape. Officials believe that the spike in cases is linked to the emergence of several variants of the virus in the region. This third wave of cases seen in Barnstable County is being described as “mountainous” compared to the rest of the state. Given that case numbers continue to increase, Governor Charles D. Baker Jr. urged residents to celebrate religious holidays such as Passover and Easter with caution. He said people should not be “throwing caution to the wind,” even as many people across the state are getting vaccinated against the disease.
