The worlds surfing final is getting under way. Threetime champion mick fanning was waiting for a wave, and then this. A little splash. Oh, [ bleep ] reporter a shark knocked fanning off his board and pulling him under. Competitive Julian Wilson frantically paddles toward him and then fanning emerges and swims for his life. Within seconds, both men are safely out of the water. I was swimming and ah did you get a couple of punches in . I punched it in the back. Reporter back on shore. I saw it just taking my board out and cracking it reporter relief and shock over their narrow escape. Like hes going under im like, i felt like i couldnt get there quick enough yeah. Just kicking in. Simply better. Live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. Wild weather in southern california. Flash floods take out a freeway. It cut off the main artery already from la to arizona. Down in the southland cannot interstate 10 is shut down in growth directions tonight. That is 50 miles from the arizona border. Flash flooding completely washed away the eastbounds of interstate 10. These pictures give you an idea of how heavily it was raining. Water rushed underneath the bridge when it collapsed. It went down right along with the truck, the freeway, everything. The passenger made it out, but firefighters had to rescue the driver. That person is in the hospital and moderate injuries. No word on how long it will take to repair the roadway. This is what happens when the Santa Ana Mountains get overwhelmed with rain. Flash flooding in the Silverado Canyon area tonight. Third time this year but thats it. Its tell you about i was telling about that. All right guys, the man accused of killing five people in modesto has been captured in san jose. The victims including the suspects daughter were all found in the same house on saturday afternoon. He was arrested about 1 00 a. M. Yesterday near blossom hill road and santa teresa boulevard in san jose. Kpix 5s Christian Hartnett has more on the suspect and victims. Reporter Martin Martinez was arrested just hours after being named a person of interest. We know at this point one of the victims was a doctor in the modesto area, another victim was martinezs own daughter. 30yearold Martin Martinez is behind bars suspected of killing five people in modesto. Family members have identified amanda cruz as one of those victims. Cruz was a doctor who worked in stanislaus county. Distraught relatives were escorted away from the crime scene saturday afternoon. Well. Caltrans says the damaged section will stay closed indefinitely. Kpix 5s lisa chan joins us in the newsroom with more on that. Good morning. Reporter good morning, well this interstate is a main route between california and arizona. And engineers will assess the damage to the bridge this morning. The collapse is being blamed on heavy rains and flooding that shut down the freeway. The bridge 50 miles west of the Arizona State line washed away. Traffic headed toward arizona was forced to turn around. One driver was injured. The Riverside County Fire Department had to extract that driver who crashed in the collapse. Rain, thunder and lightning fell over Southern California in a rare summer storm system. This caused power outages, downed trees, water rescues, and beach closures. Firefighters worked to keep mud out of half a dozen homes. Theres firefighters out there as well as a lot of heavy Equipment Operators that are trying to get that mud and debris up. Were working as quick as w
