It is a mystery that has puzzled art experts for decades. How did 16 masterpieces vanish into thin air from the Bellas Artes national museum in Argentina s capital Buenos Aires in 1980? Now, a British academic has come up with a startling new theory. She believes the art heist was staged by Argentina s own military government – in order to pay for their 1982 invasion of the Falkland Islands. And she claims the junta probably stole the £1.8 million worth of paintings – including works by Cezanne, Degas, Gauguin, Matisse and Renoir – to pay for arms from Taiwan for their 1982 bid to wrench the islands from British rule.
