More than 60 care homes investigated for banning family visits during lockdown

Last modified on Sun 16 May 2021 06.08 EDT More than 60 care homes have been investigated by the care regulator for preventing families from visiting their vulnerable elderly relatives. The Care Quality Commission said it had conducted 1,282 inspections since 8 March and had taken action against 5% of care providers about which it had “outstanding concerns” relating to visiting, and had taken further steps against 37 cases of blanket bans on visiting. The CQC was responding to criticism from the Relatives and Residents Association which said the regulator had failed to act to ensure that families can check whether their parents, grandparents or spouses are receiving appropriate care.

Care regulator retreated to sidelines during pandemic, charity says

The care regulator has “retreated to the sidelines” throughout the coronavirus pandemic, leaving older people in care at risk, a charity has said. Judy Downey, chairwoman of the Relatives & Residents Association, said the Care Quality Commission (CQC)’s failure to adapt has left care home residents “feeling bereft” of protection and scrutiny. In a letter to chief executive Ian Trenholm, she said residents have been neglected by the system at a time when they needed it the most. The CQC said it has taken “decisive action” throughout the pandemic, including undergoing more than 7,000 inspections and making it clear to providers that blanket approaches to visiting are unacceptable.

No Christmas hug for Granny: Hopes for close contact visits in Tier 4 care homes are dashed

Care homes in Tier 4 areas will not allow hand-holding or hugs for those visiting their elderly relatives amid new restrictions banning close contact.   Department of Health and Social Care guidance says visits to homes in zones with the highest level of restrictions can only take place with substantial screens in place, through windows or in visiting pods.   Vic Rayner, executive director of the National Care Forum, said the move was deeply distressing for residents and their loved ones . It was also a huge blow to all care providers who have spent the last week preparing to enable meaningful visits and spending time on training on the use of lateral flow devices , he told the Guardian.
