Care regulator retreated to sidelines during pandemic, charity says

The care regulator has “retreated to the sidelines” throughout the coronavirus pandemic, leaving older people in care at risk, a charity has said. Judy Downey, chairwoman of the Relatives & Residents Association, said the Care Quality Commission (CQC)’s failure to adapt has left care home residents “feeling bereft” of protection and scrutiny. In a letter to chief executive Ian Trenholm, she said residents have been neglected by the system at a time when they needed it the most. The CQC said it has taken “decisive action” throughout the pandemic, including undergoing more than 7,000 inspections and making it clear to providers that blanket approaches to visiting are unacceptable.

Rule that insists care home residents must isolate after each day out is abuse of human rights

Care home residents are being trapped in solitary confinement by cruel rules forcing them to isolate for 14 days if families take them out for a walk in the park, campaigners warned yesterday. While the rest of society is enjoying the return of basic freedoms, residents are effectively banned from leaving their homes for a stroll or a trip to a cafe with loved ones. In what was branded a blatant human rights abuse , guidance from the Department of Health states that those living in care homes have to self-isolate alone for 14 days if they make a visit outside the home.

Care home residents hold hands with loved ones as indoor visits resume

Care home residents have been able to hold the hands of a loved one for the first time in months as visits started to resume across England. Emotional reunions took place across the country as the Government said hundreds of thousands of care home residents could receive indoor visits from a nominated friend or relative from Monday. Every resident can nominate a person to visit them indoors, while residents with the highest care needs can receive more frequent visits from a loved one who will provide essential care and support.
