Dozens of correctional officers, probation and parole officers, and community members gathered in Des Moines on Wednesday evening for a candlelight vigil to honor the lives of two Anamosa State Penitentiary employees killed in an attack on March 23.
Registered nurse Lorena Schulte, 50, and correctional officer Robert McFarland, 46, attempted to intervene in a prison escape by two inmates when they were attacked with hammers and killed.
The two inmates who allegedly committed the killings, identified as Michael Dutcher, 28, and Thomas Woodard, 39, were both serving extended sentences for robbery.
