Ireland Courthouse Judge John Payne thought there were no mysteries left for the building on State Street to hold. Payne, set to retire May 29 as presiding justice of Springfield District Court, knew all the rhythms of the building, every corner, shadow and hallway as well as the staff who made the courthouse hum. But there was one day he turned to regard a framed document that hung in his chambers and the first justices before him for a century.
