The suspect who reportedly attacked and killed a Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy in October 2021 may face the death penalty, the county attorney's office said months later.
Maricopa County Attorney's Office announced Wednesday evening its intent to seek the death penalty if the man accused of murdering a Maricopa County deputy is convicted of First-Degree Murder.
Deputy Juan "Johnny" Ruiz, was assaulted while taking a suspect with felony warrants into custody on Oct. 9, and died on Oct. 11. The three-year veteran of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office was laid to rest on Oct. 19.
