The collision happened about noon when a 40-year-old Vista woman was traveling westbound SR-78 in a 2015 Chevrolet 2500 pickup east of Twin Oaks Valley Road, said Juan Escobar of the California Highway Patrol. For an unknown reason, the left rear wheel of her vehicle detached, went over the center median into the eastbound lanes and struck the Escondido Police Department s Ford Explorer Police Interceptor, Escobar said. The wheel damaged the police vehicle s roof and windshield.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the San Marcos man lost control of his 2007 Ford Focus while heading east near Palomar College shortly after 6 a.m. The car crashed into a metal guardrail before veering off the road and plunging down an embankment, CHP public-affairs Officer Juan Escobar said.

NORTH COUNTY    A 40-year-old Los Angeles man died after his Toyota 4Runner veered off Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton early Thursday and overturned, a California Highway Patrol officer said. The man was driving south on I-5 about 5 a.m. when, for reasons under investigation, he drove off the freeway near Basilone Road, CHP Officer Juan Escobar said. The 4Runner flipped, and the driver was thrown from the vehicle, which came to rest on railroad tracks west of the freeway, Escobar said. The driver, whose name was not released, died at the scene.
