Chicago city administration rocked by crisis following school reopenings, ongoing police violence

Chicago city administration rocked by crisis following school reopenings, ongoing police violence The Democratic Party administration of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is facing a deepening political crisis, with a wave of resignations and departures among her deputies and other city leaders, including the top three figures at Chicago Public Schools (CPS). On Tuesday morning, a spokeswoman told reporters that Lightfoot would be granting one-on-one interviews “only to Black or Brown journalists.” This move is calculated to shore up support among the identity politics-obsessed upper-middle class constituency of the Democratic Party. By shifting focus to the identities of the journalists making inquiries, Lightfoot is transparently attempting to avoid answering questions about the many scandals besetting her administration, the recent wave of resignations and the release of thousands of leaked emails by city officials.

Another Lightfoot cabinet member, Lisa Morrison Butler, resigns

Ashlee Rezin Garcia/Sun-Times file Mayor Lori Lightfoot is losing yet another key member of her cabinet. Family & Support Services Commissioner Lisa Morrison Butler announced her resignation Monday in an email to the 50 aldermen with whom she has worked so hard to combat Chicago’s entrenched problem of homelessness. “It’s a loss to the city. . She was compassionate and fair. Whoever comes behind her has big shoes to fill,” said Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd), chairman of the City Council’s Budget Committee. “I can speak to her willingness to try new approaches to dealing with the homeless situation I have in a location in my ward. It’s still problematic. But we were able to get two or three people into housing, which removed them from the streets. It’s a challenge, but she was willing to try different ideas and find funding for them.”
