stretch because as we get updates from jason, this stretches several blocks and according to sources, the perpetrator is not in custody yet so this is an active investigation. i can tell you arriving to the scene with quick force, we have emergency vehicles, like ambulances. we have the atf here, we have the fbi, jttf in addition, of course, to the nypd so a lot of law enforcement here has descended on the scene to try to get this investigation going, trying to figure out exactly what is happening here and i know jason has been giving you all of those updates, but yes, that recent good news from the nypd, no active devices at the moment, but we have seen the bomb squad here with the bomb dogs going into the subway system and checking that out to give that all-clear, but again, everyone here at the scene has been telling me that this is still very much an active investigation, still trying to exactly piece together what happened, where it happened, how many people were injured.
brooklyn, new york. cnn s brynn gingras is live on the scene. give us the latest on where this investigation stands thus far. reporter: guys, i can tell you i m making multiple source calls as are my colleagues and there s just a lot of information that s getting sort of bounced around. that s a big thing right now, is officials here on the ground are trying to piece together everything that happened. but let me get out of the way so you can see exactly what we re looking at here. this is a scene that stretches several new york city blocks. you can see those flashing lights. there are so many agencies here that have descended on the area. the fdny, nypd, jttf, atf, and fbi. you can see the scale of this investigation. what we do know from sources at this point though, as jim mentioned, five people shot, at least to the knowledge of law enforcement sources to us. one may be critical, we re hearing from the fdny that at least 13 people made that
stations have a lot of surveillance cameras. every subway station there are cameras. so authorities are looking through those. they think they may have some video. it s unclear yet, but they re looking through some of that and think they can get some clues out of that as well. such an important point. thank you, shimon, for that reporting. i want to go to our senior law enforcement analyst and former fbi deputy director, andrew mccabe, and cnn law enforcement analyst and former u.s. capitol police chief terrence gainer. thank you for joining me. andy, i want to start with you on the idea that we re now told the fbi is working with the nypd on this. probably not a surprise, but what does that look like? so that cooperation is very well established. this is the unit that has worked together longer than any other joint terrorism task force in the country. the first one was ininantly a
partnership. now it includes many other agencies as well. you re talking about hundreds of investigators who worked together shoulder to shoulder every day and investigate all of these incidents and attacks in new york. some of which turn out to be terrorist related. some of which do not. but the important thing is that the jttf deploys immediately. so those folks are on scene working with the broader nypd investigative team, working with the crime scene technicians to collect all that evidence to determine if, by some chance, there is a connection to terrorism, and if we need to worry about a follow on or coordinated attack. and andy, i wanted to talk about the notion of terror. because we heard at the press conference last hour them initially saying we re not investigating any terrorism at this point and then said, well, we re always going to be open to it. but you just heard the mayor of new york city, eric adams, say, well, we re being terrorized.
what the officials said at this time? yeah, they came out right out of the bat and essentially said they don t believe this is an act of terrorism at the moment. hopefully calming people s fears. but they said that s something that s still being investigated. the jttf, joint terrorism task force is here on the scene helping with the investigation with new york city and nypd and federal law enforcement officials. but as far as what happened this morning during the morning commute, you reiterated, you said it to viewers, but a person described as a black man, 5 5 with heavy build wearing a gray hoodie and a green construction vest boarded a train here in brooklyn. put on a gas mask, opened a canister filled with smoke and then opened fire on that train. of course, we re trying to learn exactly where that person fled. that s something that i asked law enforcement i asked the
