The return of cicadas could be imminent in New Jersey.
It’s been 17 years since cicadas last made an appearance but the new breed, called Brood X, may emerge any time now. Jeff Wolfe, a Department of Agriculture spokesman, said the bugs should come out soon but it depends on ground temperature.
Cicadas will surface when soil temperatures reach 64 degrees. A warm weekend ahead, with temperatures approaching 90 degrees in some parts of the state, should speed along the process.
Once the ground is warm enough, expect to see cicadas across the Garden State.
“Cicadas are widespread in NJ, “ Wolfe said, “ranging from Cape May County to Sussex County.”
