very deadly. in fact, eight children nationwide died last week alone, that brings the total this summer to 23. a terrible, terrible statistic. organizers of this event set up a memorial garden so that people could see the faces of these children who have died, read their names and look at their ages, just a horrifying situation that drives home the dangers of leaving a child in a hot car. to try to prevent these tragedies the department of transportation and department of health and human services came up with the look before you lock campaign. they are providing educational materials to head start programs and child care centers around the country, materials that will help educate parents about the dangers of leaving a child in a hot car. among those helping get that message out are reginald mckinnen, his 17-month-old died because he forgot she was in the back of the car and left her there for four hours. something that i don t wish upon anybody, to have to go through. it
prosecutors also outlined the efforts to go after thomass personal property he took from the district of columbia and i will remember when they raided his home, they took his 2008 chevy tahoe and victory motorcycle. the court papers indicate those items were purchased with funds taken from the district of columbia. if thomas does resign, we re told a special elect will be held in ward 5. i talked to the board of elections and they say they have been planning and preparing the last week or so, expecting some type of resignation to come their way. and this is not going to be cheap, brian. we re told at minimum, the special election here in ward 5 will cost at least $300,000. and the s. couple chairman expects to receive harry thomas resignation soon and showed concern about his coworker. and right now, i pray for harry thomas and his family. right now, he will focus on the family and do what is best for the family and the city. that is probably the best thing to do. re

those backups on already congested roads turned ugly this morning when a trash truck overturned on the westbound lanes of 66. then a truck carrying cantaloupes overturned on the beltway and connecticut avenues. finally this morning a serious accident shut down i-70 in howard county. right now more on that stinky commute both on the beltway and 66. news4 s megan mcgrath joins us live from the scene. megan, good morning? reporter: good morning, barbara. we re seeing some improvement, but still a slow go through this area. you can see the backup here and off in the days tans, the directional arrows telling people to get over to the right. we have one lane getting by inbound on 66 to the right. we re just here right where the highway goes over top of the beltway. now this was a bad accident this morning. it s always bad when a truck overturns, but talk about really stinky. this was a truck that was carrying a lot of garbage and it ended up all over the road. a sticky situation
