Firefighters in the Oakland Hills arent taking any chances after a rash of suspicious fires yesterday. That left a community on edge. Investigators say the fires are suspicious, because of when and where they started. Nbc bay areas Jody Hernandez joins us live with more on what firefighters are doing to prevent any more fires. Jody . Reporter janelle, ill tell you, firefighters here at station 25 in oakland have been very busy, after battling multiple fires yesterday. They have been on high alert today. By no means, are they alone. Saving lives and property, thats what were here for. Reporter Security Guard alex normally patrols this Oakland Hills neighborhood on the lookout for prowlers. But now hes also on the lookout for a potential firebug. After a series of suspicious fires broke out yesterday afternoon. Just pop out from nowhere. Theres got to be something that caused the fire. Bedroom of one of the homes. Firefighters say he died of smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. But firefighters say it did start outside between the two homes where youre looking at right now with our live shot. The tree in between those two homes is some sort of a cypress tree and that tree caught fire and that helped the fire get above into the roof line area, liz. And that is what caused the fire to spread so rapidly. Once it got into the rafters and to the attic space, there was basically no slowing it down. And it did continue to burn in fact, five hours later there was a big flareup and fortunately firefighters had not left the scene and they were able to put that out. Those flames were so intense, len. Thank goodness those brave Tree Trimmers were there. They saved the day. Unbelievable. Reporter thats right.
