The Ministry of Health has asked the private sector to invest more in establishing private hospitals in order to achieve universal health coverage.
Speaking during commissioning of Atlas Medical Center in Blantyre on Tuesday afternoon, the Ministry’s Chief of Health Services, Dr Queen Dube, said it pathetic that out of 9, 498 hospitals in the country, only 121 are owned by the private sector while the rest belong to government and religious institutions.
“I therefore ask a few privileged people to actively participate in the provision of quality, equity and affordable health services to citizens in the country,” said Dr Dube
To offer affordable and equitable healthcare services
A full scale healthcare facility, Atlas Medical Centre has been opened in Blantyre on Tuesday that is set to offer advanced and innovative healthcare technology.
Located along Mandala Road, just some 200m from the junction at Red Cross premises and just after Al Taqwa Mosque at Ginnery Corner Atlas Medical Centre shall offer affordable and equitable healthcare services that include general and specialist medical clinics.
The specialist clinics include paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, hypertension, diabetes, nephrology (kidney) and general surgery.
It is also equipped to treat infectious diseases, stroke, thyroid as well as heart, lungs and gastro care.

Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) has challenged the civil society, the media and other stakeholders to assume a leading role in tracking public expenditure in an effort to increase levels of transparency and accountability on public resources.
CCJP National Coordinator Boniface Chibwana said the mismanagement of K6.2 billion Covid-19 Management Funds should act as a wake-up call for the citizenry to develop interest in tracking public resources.
Chibwana made the remarks in Lilongwe on Thursday when he briefed stakeholders on the project the Commission is implementing in collaboration with Hivos.
