JUST as COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact negatively on nations of the world, the Federal University of Technology (FUTA), Akure, has recorded a feat through one of its senior academics, Dr Gideon Idowu of the Department of Chemistry.
Dr Idowu won two international grants for research projects seeking to investigate the Ecological Impact of COVID-19 Prevention Strategies: Fate and Impact of Medical Face Masks on Soil Ecosystem.
The awards are from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), United Kingdom and the Natural Environment Research Council-British Ecological Society (NERC-BES), United Kingdom.

One of the leading researchers at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Dr Folashade Olajuyigbe, has won the 2020 International Research Grant from the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Collaborative Research Programme (ICGEB-CRP) Italy. Olajuyigbe a prolific scholar, who won the 2017 Fulbright African Research Scholar Programme (ARSP) award for advanced research in the United States for the 2017/2018 academic year, was awarded the International grant that was keenly contested by applicants from 50 ICGEB member countries at both national and International levels. With the grant comes her designation as the Principal Investigator for the project titled “Enzymatic Analysis of the Cellulolytic System of Ligninolytic Stenotraphmonas sp. and Development of Bifunctional Chimeric Enzyme for Efficient Simultaneous Delignification and Saccharification of Lignocellulose Biomass”

Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology( FUTA) Akure, Professor Joseph Fuwape has advised Nigeria to adopt appropriate research strategies that will promote green economy to mitigate the increasing dangers of unbridled exploitation of the environment.
Fuwape gave the advice while declaring open a two-day virtual conference of the Commonwealth Forestry Association (CFO), which originated from FUTA campus in Akure on December 2 and 3 with the theme “Forest Ecosystem Potential in Nigeria, Opportunities for Green Economy in the 21st Century”.
He described a green economy as a situation where growth in employment and income was driven by public and private investment into economic activities, infrastructure and assets that allow reduction in carbon emission and pollution.
