Rare Joseph DeCamp Scarborough painting to be sold on Feb 27

Portsmouth Herald THOMASTON, Maine - A newly discovered seascape painting with historic connection to the Prouts Neck area of Scarborough by renowned American artist Joseph DeCamp (1858-1923) will be sold at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Winter Auction on Saturday, Feb. 27.  Titled “View of the Sprague House, Prouts Neck, Maine”, the work was a gift from DeCamp to his Prouts Neck neighbor, late 19th c. coal baron and shipping magnate Phineas W. Sprague; and it has since descended in this local family.  The painting is signed and inscribed “To my friend Sprague,” and dated 1905. Thomaston Place owner and auctioneer Kaja Veilleux said: “We’re honored that the Sprague descendants have entrusted this important work to us. We ultimately hope to see it preserved for future generations to enjoy.”
