Tonights featured author s historian David Mccullough the author of a dozen books including bestselling histories on the american revolution, the invention of manned spaceflight the settlement of the Northwest Territory and the creation of the brooklyn bridge. He is a two time winner both Pulitzer Prize and National Book award and appeared on booktv and cspan over 75 times. Coming up over the next several hours we will show you some of those programs. First up in 1992 he appeared on cspans book not programmed to talk about his biography of president harry truman. Portrait caricatures took on a martial air with all the military heroes who were portrayed. But it sent many to the field, like the soldier artists. Artists like Winslow Homer went to the field to do sketches for the weekly newspapers and evolved into very successful artists. But in terms of what it did to landscaping, it totally revolutionized the romantic attitude artists had toward this socalled american eden, the pristine landscape of the americas. And to help us understand the past as a historian at New York Historical, i work alongside these treasures every day and it is my great privilege to use them in exhibitions as well. We used to ask ourselves that question often when we were whittling down the list and there was so much to choose from. The hardest things to preserve are textiles. Some are really extraordinary in terms of how they survived. Absolutely. We have a uniform. Some military buttons. Foot locker and a drum. Very interesting. Fashion, maybe, maybe not.
