nbc s francis koh has the latest. reporter: residents across the mid-atlantic are cleaning up following a fierce storm system that tore across the region and left behind a large path of destruction across several states. this particular storm, almost twice as many as hurricane irene last summer. reporter: emergencies were declared in maryland, ohio, virginia, and west virginia as well as in the district of columbia. it s a disaster all over. reporter: power crews in many areas are working around the clock to restore service to more than 2 million people. there s no air. it s really hot today. so the power, i think, is the main thing that everyone s really suffering from. reporter: with temperatures soaring past the 100 ha-degree k in many places, dozens of communities have opened cooling stations. it s here for the people who don t have electricity. they can come here, cool off, especially people with very young children, elderly, people with respiratory probl

michael j. his sister priscilla reported her brother missing and posted these flyers after he didn t show up for a funeral of a family friend, but it wasn t until tuesday, seven days after the accident, san jose police found michael. his dad says he was just 50 to 60 feet from his truck. why couldn t they see him? the investigation wasn t a good investigation. i m glad that they did find my son, and i give them props for people that were out there and found him, but it should have been a lot sooner. reporter: priscilla sanchez believes chp officers didn t do enough. according to them, they did an hour search. 50 feet. 50 feet from where his truck was found, that s not going to take them that long. when we left scene, we were confident there was nobody there. in hindsight, did it work out the way it was supposed to work out, not at all? but given the circumstances that s the way it happened. it s unfortunate. priscilla says she s now making it her mission to get answ
what ignited this blaze. it began before 10:00 this morning. in 15 minutes it went from a one alarm to three-alarm fire. firefighters say it appears it started in a common stairwell between the building, and they kicked off an aggressive attack inside and contained it by noon. we spoke with a man whose ground floor business was heavily damaged and has been red-tagged. he to carry his mom to safety, her home destroyed. it s very hard because i we know, we struggle in this business. this is the hardest business, we re small owners. we re working for some of the summer here. my mom and my brother and all the people in the building, they re safe. even in the third building, all the people there are safe. that s the major thing. thank god for that. reporter: everyone thankful that nobody got seriously hurt. six firefighters suffered minor injuries, three of them when a staircase collapsed. fire officials say a woman na lived here walked out of a wall of fire but was relative
