The man arrested after this wild and frightening ride through San Franciscos Castro District made his first Court Appearance. It all started when 70yearold kenneth rotters minivan jumped the curb and rolled down the sidewalk for more than a block. Nbc bay areas Christie Smith has more. Reporter it is a breech Court Appearance this afternoon, with a public defender describing a potential problem with the brakes on the minivan, while prosecutors describe what they call an attempt to flee. The drought. Major flooding from sonoma and marin county. The recent storms have created a lot of concern and catastrophe here in the bay area. The 100foot tall eucalyptus tree slammed down. But the storm has also reduced worries about our water supply. Last summer you could see the bottom of this reservoir. Today its nearly full. Lexington reservoir is above capacity and spilling over. So are coyote and u vis. Our rez voice are 162 of normal for this time of the year. Reporter weve gotten so much rain we have a new problem. Were releasing water from all of the reservoirs to make room for flood protection. Reporter our ground water supply is up significantly. And thats not all. Our statewide reservoirs are all looking very good overall and snow pack is just looking outstanding. Reporter overall the gray days of january have left us with a much brighter water future. Highway 17. There are reports the suspect hit several cars before his car finally broke down near red wood estates. At that point Scotts Valley police opened fire, but dont know whether they hit the suspect who ultimately disappeared into the woods. Swat teams are here including sheriffs deputies from santa cruz and santa clara county. Chp is also here along with the fbi. Nearby schools were locked down for several hours. That was terrifying for parents, but the kids seemed a little less worried. Its always scary for a parent to hear that there was a shooter nearby and now the school is in lock down and you cant get to your son. Reporter how scary was it . Been more than two dozen highway shootings along east bay freeways. Chp says many are believed to be gang related. Tonight authorities are calling this a targeted shooting and say witness calls were the key to finding the suspect so quickly. Gunfire is dangerous. Thats the whole reason were trying to arrest the people responsible for this. Be a good witness. Dont get involved but be a good witness. We had some good witnesses in this case, and thats whats helped us with the investigation.
