The drought. Major flooding from sonoma and marin county. The recent storms have created a lot of concern and catastrophe here in the bay area. The 100foot tall eucalyptus tree slammed down. But the storm has also reduced worries about our water supply. Last summer you could see the bottom of this reservoir. Today its nearly full. Lexington reservoir is above capacity and spilling over. So are coyote and u vis. Our rez voice are 162 of normal for this time of the year. Reporter weve gotten so much rain we have a new problem. Were releasing water from all of the reservoirs to make room for flood protection. Reporter our ground water supply is up significantly. And thats not all. Our statewide reservoirs are all looking very good overall and snow pack is just looking outstanding. Reporter overall the gray days of january have left us with a much brighter water future. The district says we received 200 of normal for january and were not even done with january yet. Reporting live in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. Lets bring in jeff ranieri with some impressive january rainfall totals. We still have three good months here to potentially pick up more rainfall. Its for good reason they are going to release the water to leave some room in the reservoirs. Every single storm we had in january was due to the Atmospheric River or Pineapple Express pointing the water towards the bay area. The rainfall totals are phenomenal and this is why we had the flooding damage. Nearly 19 inches since january 1st in santa rosa, over 13 in mill valley, 9 1 2 in San Francisco, 8 inches in livermore, 20 to 25 inch in the Santa Cruz Mountains and thats why a lot of these south bay z reservoirs are at bankful in kperms of capacities. Major california reservoirs 38 to 91 of capacity. North bay 100 , east pay 75 to 107 , south bay from 42 to 103 of capacity. Now the largest rise in the south bay no doubt happened along the lexington reservoir. January 1st it with us 42 of capacity, today 101 . Raj and janelle, that is a 35foot gain since january 1st. Both directions of highway 9 at 35 shut down because of the unstable hillside. Its closed between Redwood Gulch road and the santa clara line. Following some developing news in oakley this evening, a car crash in front of freedom high school. Our nbc chopper on the scene . One car four students from freedom high school. In the other car, a parent with two kids. Police say the parent pulled into traffic and didnt see the other car coming. All seven people involved in this crash have been taken to a local hospital. The search for a missing teen driver who ended up in Alameda Creek is done for the night and still no sign of the 18yearold. This afternoon the recovery crews managed to pull her honda accord out of the Rushing Creek but did not find the teenager. Robert handa joins was more. Shes been missing since saturday now but the family is still hold out hope. Reporter well thats right. Adds you know, jada jenkins a family has been a big part of the search. It was a Family Member who spotted the car in the rushing water. And regardless of what agencies do next, the family says it will not give up. Emergency responders say water agencies cut the flow of water into the fast rushing Alameda Creek so crews could get to the silver honda accord. The teen was headed from tracy to the peninsula to visit friends on saturday morning. Today the crews recovered the car but didnt find jada. Were still dealing with the fact that we do not have our daughter and our sister and our child home. But were not stopping here. Were going to continue to search for her. The Sheriffs Department says the car windows were broken out and the seat belt infastened. It is likely she unfastened the seat belt and tried to get out. My daughters are my life. So i have hope that we may find her, maybe shes in a hospital. Im not sure. But im holding out that we may find her. Reporter Family Members thanked the emergency members and said with todays discovery they could use someone with jadas personality and drive to help find her. Shes the one that everybody goes to when they need encouragement. Shes a beautiful person. Reporter well, with the darkness agencies say the search has wrapped up for the day. But the water level will have to be restored soon so a decision on whether to resume the search will have to be made tomorrow morning. The jenkins say theyll be here no matter what. Well weve just learned in the past hour that the California State Parks service will remove his home from the edge of the cliff immediately. In fact rangers have already turned off the gas service to his him. Well traffic is back to normal this evening on highway 13 in oakland. Crews spent the day repairing that large sinkhole. About 20 to 30 feet deep. It was spotted early yesterday morning. The chp says it was likely caused by a combination of a ruptured pipe and all of the rain weve gotten. Thankfully no major accident but a lot of flat tires too there before they closed off the lane. But all lanes are reopened tonight. People all across the bay area are capturing incredible pictures. Reporter authorities found the couple along with their two cats dead in different areas of their apartment but what killed them remains a mystery. It was ruled out carbon mon oa monoxide. This is the design for a new campus building which will place Students Studying Sciences and engineering under a roof. Its thanks to a 100 million donation. San francisco has been named the worst city in the state to drive in. Berkeley is considered the fourth most dangerous and oakland comes in at number 21. Throughout the east bay well have a chilly day here in livermore, 52 degrees, 56 in walnut creek and 55 expected in oakland. Through the peninsula, palo alto 56, even sunshine in Half Moon Bay and 55 if you want to head towards the coastline. Watch out for the dangerous waves. Up towards the marina 55. And in the north bay anywhere from 55 to 57 expected in napa. With the recent storm activity a lot of people are still wondering what could be happening through the next couple of weeks. I want to look at the long range forecast. What were seeing is la nina is going to be hanging around for a week or so and then as we head throughout february were done with la nina and that could mean some near average rain chances for february. Long range forecast show possibly storms beginning to return february 1st through the 5th at this point. And weve also heard a lot about el nino just because weve had so much rainfall as of yet. El nino has been done for months. Its more about la nina at least most recently. We have the dry weather we talked about for wednesday, thursday, dont get worried, just a slight chance of a spotty shower.
