Q&A: Ultimaker CEO Jürgen von Hollen on building an ecosystem, a culture & taking the company to the next level
Ultimaker CEO Jürgen von Hollen sits in his Frankfurt home, having met only two members of the Ultimaker team physically and unsure exactly when he will make his first trip across to Geldermalsen, Netherlands. His first appointment is scheduled for May, but heâs optimistic he might be able to bring that forward to March or April should the COVID-19 restrictions ease off.
Despite the challenges of starting a new role in lockdown a three-hour drive away from the companyâs headquarters, von Hollen is working to pick up where departing CEO Jos Burger left off. He wants to further develop the companyâs ecosystem, establish the right culture and, ultimately, take Ultimaker to the new heights. Here, he tells us how he intends to do all of that and more.

I caught up with Gregory Elfering, President of Ultimaker Americas, for a discussion of Ultimaker’s 2020 reflections and 2021 trends and predictions.
Elfering joined Ultimaker about two years ago, and in January stepped up to lead the Americas arm of the business. He’s been in the 3D printing industry for close to 15 years now, including a long stint at 3D Systems. Now, he’s leading Netherlands-based Ultimaker in growth on this side of the pond. With 16 employees and growing, the business has a “good logistics setup”, manufacturing 3D printers designed in the Netherlands for a ‘made in the USA’ product. The base in Memphis, Tennessee works well, as the city is “a good location for logistics.”
