The Sounders responded by throttling the away squad, completely dominating in a 3-0 win that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. Seattle created consistent pressure on the Galaxy, ending with nine shots on goal versus two for the opponent. Seattle has maintained their strong play on both sides of the ball so far this year, and rotated a few positions without missing a beat while welcoming back one big name to some playing time for the first time in 2021.

A 3-0 victory on Sunday evening vaulted Seattle Sounders FC (2-0-1, 7 points) to the top of the MLS Western Conference, as a brace from Raúl Ruidíaz and another goal from Brad Smith secured all three points over the LA Galaxy (2-1-0, 6 points). With the win, Seattle remains unbeaten in 2021, and the Rave Green have not lost to the Galaxy in their last five MLS matches against the Southern California side.

Seattle went to LA to play against the FCs and, after an early blip, were the better team for 88 minutes. The final was 1-1, but the Sounders will be pleased with their recovery after giving up a first-minute goal and earning the bulk of the best opportunities thereafter. Any time you get a draw on the road, especially against a good team, you’ll take it. But for the hella greedy people out there, Seattle showed well enough to win this match.

For all the hype about LAFC being the favorite to win everything, this was a tame match for Frei and Seattle wasn’t consistently tested. He had three saves and had to manage the game some, but the Sounders defense was again very stout and forced 6/9 shots from outside the box. Welcome to 2021. Based on pre-season predictions, Seattle was an old, bad team and Minnesota great and dominant. Playing without the injured Nico Lodeiro and Jordan Morris, and losing starters like Kelvin Leerdam and Gustav Svensson, the Sounders were going to get run out of the building in a game between two teams heading in different directions.
Reports of their demise were greatly exaggerated.
What really happened was Seattle outplayed their opponent almost all match, maximized their big plays, and took advantage of nearly all opportunities they created. Seattle played very strong defense in a three-back system, giving up 17 shots, but of the five on frame only three came from inside the box. The offense took a while to warm up, but they created the better chances for most of the game and coasted to a 4-0 opening day win.
