Indie Basement: Top 40 Albums of 2020

Indie Basement: Top 40 Albums of 2020 It s a given that 2020 has been a year unlike any that most of us have ever experienced. Time seemed to fold in on itself (for me at least), and March to December seemed to go by in an instant but also in slow motion. If felt this way for music, too. Albums I thought were last year were this year and vice versa. Looking through the months, though, it was a bit shocking how many records I really liked were released and how many of these groups I wish I had gotten to see live this year.

Loma tell us their Top 10s of 2020

Loma tell us their Top 10s of 2020 Shearwater) released their genuinely wonderful second album, Don t Shy Away, back in October. It s hypnotic, haunting, mysterious and comforting, and features Brian Eno on the ethereal closing track, Homing. If you haven t checked this album out, do yourself a favor and listen and watch some of their beautifully made videos below. It s end of the year and everybody seems to be making Top 10 lists, but Loma s three members have offered us slightly unusual ones. Emily Cross is “Top Ten (vegan) things I made in my kitchen in 2020, Dan Duszynski tells us the “Top Ten Things I am Thinking About Right Now” and Jonathan Meiburg gets wild with “Top Ten Backyard Animal Sightings of 2020.”

album reviews: Ty Segall s Fuzz, Loma, Ela Minus, more

Loma (members of Shearwater and Cross Record); the terrific debut album from techno pop artist Ela Minus; the third album from Ty Segall s proto-metal-influenced trio Fuzz; the new album from jangle S.F. power-poppers Latitude; and Gruff Rhys has a new memoir on the way. There are LOTS more albums out this week than those four, and Andrew reviews some of them (including two from Big Thief s Adrianne Lenker) in this week s Notable Releases. More Basement-approved stuff from this week: the double-album reissue of The Fall s We re less than two weeks out from the election, please vote. Head below for this week s reviews and news.

The List: Stereoboard s Best Albums of 2020

The List: Stereoboard s Best Albums of 2020 Monday, 14 December 2020 Written by Stereoboard Well, that was weird, wasn t it? 2020 will not be fondly remembered (aside from one particular bloke losing a big job) and 2021 is starting its race with some ground to make up, but as we locked down and stayed home the soundtrack was excellent at least. So much good music made its way into the world over the past 12 months, reminding us of what we have to cherish and also what we potentially have to lose. Here s our pick of the best of the best with a reminder: the artistic and creative industries cannot be allowed to wither and die. Support your local record shop. Support your local venues. Keep going.
