Mayor Danene Sorace appointed Captain Richard Mendez to serve as Acting Chief and will recommend a permanent appointment to City Council, the city said.
With the changing of each year, LNP | LancasterOnline staff compile a list of trends and events that could impact the county. Â
Looking back at our story on trends at the start of 2020 is like looking in a time capsule in some ways, with trends focused largely on development â from new Rutters and Sheetz to the Rock Lititz expansion to projects in Lancaster city â and on education and health care trends that had nothing to do with distance learning or COVID-19. Instead, school start times and student privacy were the burgeoning local stories.
If we learned anything in 2020, itâs that we canât fully predict what will be news in unprecedented times. That said, we have taken a look at some of the trends and events LNP reporters will be covering in 2021. Hereâs our list.
Danene Sorace, mayor of Lancaster city, is expected to announce her bid for a second term on Wednesday morning.
In a video posted to her campaignâs Youtube page, Sorace says she is âmore determined than ever to fight for every block.â I m determined to see it through, to see the work through, Sorace said Tuesday night. I m commited to the City of Lancaster and its residents.
Sorace, 48, said the cityâs voters âput me to work as your Mayor to build a stronger and more equitable city for all,â adding, âI am proud of the progress we have made. And I know there is still much to do.â
Lancasterâs interim police chief would like to shorten that title.
John T. Bey, who was in his sixth day on the job Monday, made it clear he wants the job full-time.
âIâm not here to keep the seat warm,â said Bey, 56.
While heâs still assessing the department, he said during a 45-minute interview that heâs not aware of any problems.
âI want people to know that this is a great police department. I want people to know from the top down â from the mayor all the way down to our community service folks â that this is a professionally run, integrity driven police department who cares about this community. And Iâm just part of that,â he said.
