This last summer was the 50th anniversary of the Democratic National convention in chicago. I do not know if any of you saw any of the specials. We have some footage that is pretty shocking for people to see nowadays. Before 1972, there were very few primaries. Most of the delegates to both conventions were elected through back channels and small party conventions. Back when meetings across various politicians. In 1968 73 of democratic delegates to the convention had been elected this way so less than 25 were elected in a way that we normally do it now. President Lyndon Johnson had taken himself out of the race. He was not up for reelection in 1968 which initiated a freeforall in the Democratic Party between a number of candidates. One of which was popular was unfortunately a dead by august 68 who was robert kennedy. He was a unifying candidate for

Lets start with you up in new jersey. And you grew up how did your parents get to new jersey . Who were the . Guest im the son of a black man from the segregated south. My father is 82 years old. He was born in 1937 in longview texas and raised in galveston under segregation, under jim crow. He moved to the west as soon as he could and was running war on poverty programs under Lyndon Johnsons Great Society initiative. He met my mother who is nine years his junior in san diego where he was heading up poverty programs and she was fresh out of college. She is the daughter of evangelical christians. Her father was a minister and he was very much a part of this Mainstream American Society that was certainly opposed interracial marriage in the laidback and 60s, early 1970s, you didnt use the word white about anybody.
