Prototype Shows Promise As Approach to Countering Pancreatic Cancer

Prototype Shows Promise As Approach to Countering Pancreatic Cancer News provided by Share this article Share this article NEW YORK, May 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ A research team has designed a molecule with potential to interfere in a new way with altered proteins that cause abnormal growth in 35 percent of pancreatic cancers. Published online in Nature Communications on May 11, a new study found that a molecule called a monobody clings to cancer-causing versions of the KRAS protein and keeps them from transmitting their signals. Changes in the DNA of the KRAS gene – which encodes a molecular switch that toggles between active and inactive states to regulate growth – cause the related protein to become stuck in the on mode. Cells with such mutations continually multiply and give rise to cancer.

Earth Week coming up | News, Sports, Jobs - The Mining Journal

cbleck@miningjournal.net Anderton’s Earth Week 2021 is coming up, with many environmental activities planned. They include Zoom presentations, clean-up events and others. (Photo courtesy of Northern Michigan University) MARQUETTE People can celebrate the environment through the upcoming Anderton’s Earth Week 2021. The event is named after the late John Anderton, a former head of the Northern Michigan University Department of Earth, Environmental and Geological Sciences. He passed away in March 2014. One of the many organizers of the multitude of events to be held in-person, outdoors and virtually is John O’Bryan, who is finishing what he called an “individually created degree” in climate advocacy at NMU. O’Bryan has been an intern with the NMU Sustainability Advisory Council, but his involvement with Earth Week is part of an independent capstone course of climate advocacy with Professor Josh Ewalt in the communications department.

Help NMU to become carbon neutral, letter asks President Erickson

MARQUETTE, MI    Environmentalists and others are asking Northern Michigan University President Fritz Erickson to commit to making campus carbon neutral by 2050. Professor Ryan Stock wrote an open letter outlining the threats climate change poses and asked Erickson to also sign the Global Universities and Colleges Climate Letter to make the commitment public. Stock’s letter was signed by more than 1,000 people from the campus community. NMU climate advocate John O’Bryan says Northern could achieve carbon neutrality by substituting the burning of fossil fuels with reliance on its biomass steam plant and other technologies. “Combining the biomass burning, which is carbon neutral, with carbon capture technology, to actually sequester those carbon emissions into geological formations… that could potentially result in a net-negative source of emissions,” he says.
