The modest building that houses the Terry Family Funeral Home in North Portland might seem an unlikely place to bear a bronze plaque from the National Register of Historic Places. Just 71 years old, it is an unassuming, single-story gray building that blends in with unremarkable midcentury architecture around it. But on July 10, Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), co-chair of the U.S. Congress’s Historic Preservation Caucus, presented the building’s owners with the coveted placard indicating that 2337 North Williams Avenue is of great importance to the history of the local Black community, the city’s (unofficial) chapter of the Black Panthers – and to this very paper.

Portland, OR building opened by Black doctor added to National Register

A building that has an extensive history of championing Black businesses in North Portland has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. According to a spokesperson for U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, the former Dr. John D. Marshall Building was officially added to the list in June, courtesy of a nomination from City of Portland officials and the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office.
