Since last year s protests across the country, some local advocacy organizations have seen renewed interest in their missions, and for Mokah Jasmine Johnson, this has helped shine a light on a topic important to her: the criminal justice system.
Johnson, president and co-founder of the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement, said when she jumped into activism, her main focus was to address discrimination and racism. Through research, she learned the percentage of Black and brown people in jail in Athens was quite high. To help address this, she started the Freedom Fund in 2018, which helps provide bail relief or legal defense for those lacking financial resources.
