John "Tbone" Paxton and the Paxton/Spangler Band Trombonist/vocalist John "Tbone" Paxton has been on the Detroit music scene for over 40 years, most notably as a member of the horn section of the Sun Messengers. The group was a reliably funky horn band known for its work as the house band for the Detroit Pistons for many years. After over 30 years with the Messengers, Tbone has stepped out on his own. His new recording on the Eastlawn label simply entitled "Joys" is his sophomore effort coming after his debut, "Back in Your Own Backyard". Tbone started with the Sun Messengers and RJ Spangler in 1980. They have reunited, and for the last decade performed as the Paxton/Spangler Band. They will celebrate this new recording with two nights at the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe in Grosse Pointe on January 18 and 19.

Local band brings back ‘The King of the Jukebox’ with new recordings
RJ Spangler of the RJ Spangler Band became familiar with the songs of Louis Jordan as a young musician and has been playing them ever since.

METRO DETROIT He’s not nearly as well known today, but singer/songwriter/saxophonist/band leader Louis Jordan was once one of the biggest music stars in America.
The RJ Spangler Band is trying to make sure audiences don’t forget this groundbreaking artist. Besides continuing to play Jordan’s songs at live shows, the band is now releasing “The RJ Spangler Band Live at the Scarab Club Series: A Tribute to Louis Jordan,” a CD that includes some of Jordan’s biggest hits.
