Motorcycles and music are bringing thousands to downtown Leesburg this weekend, rain or shine. This is the first year since the pandemic that Bikefest is back to three full days in April.
AMVETS raise money for Leesburg, Fruitland Park police K-9s
Cindy Peterson
LEESBURG K-9 units are a vital part of a police force.
That s particularly true for the Leesburg Police Department, which currently has four full-service K-9s on roster and for the Fruitland Park Police Department, whose puppy, Droby, just joined the force.
K-9s are also expensive; it costs an estimated $20,000 to purchase, raise and train a K-9 for service.
To help offset the costs, the AMVETS Post 2006 in Leesburg held a chance drawing for guns that raised nearly $8,000. That money was split between the two police departments to bolster their K-9 endeavors.
