[applause] very kind, thank you, welcome to all of you, and those who joined online for a gentleman who needs very little introduction and is a great friend of the heritage foundation and many of you individually. it still is a pleasure to introduce senator mike lee and i will introduce him not just as one of the most thoughtful members of the united states senate, not just one of the patriots of our age but someone who in spite of challenges facing this great republic remains steadfast in his cheerfulness. it s a privilege on behalf of all of us at the heritage foundation to introduce our friends senator mike lee. good afternoon. thank you, good to be here. thanks for being here. we will get into this wonderful book which i told you earlier i have since read. you can decide how well i did based on the questions but before we get into the book there s a lot going on in washington this week. i know you don t mind a question about that. what is your assessment? a lot

Interestingly enough, he was also noted as one of the most successful authors of the first half of the 19th century. Matter of fact, when he was 65 years old, that particular year his book royalties gave him twice as much money as his salary as a justice of the Supreme Court. As many of you know, he became when he was appointed at that time, the youngest justice to serve on the Supreme Court. And one of the youngest ever to serve. He was appointed by president madison in 1811. And was actually took office the following year in february of 1812. As most of you you know, im sure, he made a significant mark on american law in his 33 years on the bench. But his greatest contribution to jurisprudence is his commentaries on the constitution in which he set forth a philosophy of judicial restraint. He was quite enamored by the philosophical approach to the law
