Angling for time at Presque Isle State Park s Misery Bay, Horseshoe Pond

Angling for time at Presque Isle State Park s Misery Bay, Horseshoe Pond About 40 ice-fishing huts dotted Presque Isle State Park s Misery Bay late Saturday morning. Anglers hauled their sleds filled with huts, augers, heaters, minnow buckets, rods and scoopers onto ice that measured about 4 inches in depth at one of the Erie region s most popular winter fishing venues. John Kitcho, 40, of Erie, drilled a couple holes in the ice and set up his collapsible ice shanty as his son, John, 5, scooped ice out of the freshly augured holes. It s really why I wanted to get him out here so he could learn a little bit about ice safety, the elder Kitcho said. I keep saying to him, Safety is the only thing that matters in ice fishing. If you catch a lot of fish throughout the years, it s a bonus. That s sort of how I like to look at it.
