Can you believe it? Religionâs been taking a hit

Note how religion conditions believers to follow poor leaders
In warning of the dangers of âreligion without religion,â Jeff Jacoby had me hearing echoes of the very case atheist writer Richard Dawkins has made (âReligion in America is fading, but true believers are everywhere,â Opinion, April 14). Dawkins argues that religion is corrosive to critical thinking and that conditioning people to accept articles on faith and to accept leaders without question makes them susceptible to manipulation. That argument suggests that Americaâs unusually high level of church attendance in the latter half of the previous century may actually have created the conditions for the current malaise, of which QAnon hysteria is the most extreme example.
