Charity event with master compiler John Halpern
Dave Gorman and fellow crossword compiler John Halpern are to crowdsource their next word puzzle.
They want the public to help them create a crossword in the theme of the band Madness on Friday, picking both the answers and devising clues and mysterious clues as the crossword is put together before their eyes.
Halpern has compiled grids for many national newspapers while Gorman last year became a compiler for The Independent under the pseudonym Bluth and sometimes the Telegraph as Django.
Friday’s event is free, bu the pair are asking for donations for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

If you’ve always dreamed of learning how to make cryptic crosswords (or to “set” or “compose” them, as our fellow puzzle lovers say in the U.K.), John Halpern, one of Britain’s most prolific and popular cryptic composers, will reveal the magic behind those twisted clues, along with New York Times Crossword editor Will Shortz.
Mr. Halpern will compose a cryptic crossword live, from start to finish, in the virtual event, which takes place Feb. 5 from 7-9 p.m. Eastern. Mr. Shortz will join in, adding commentary on what The New York Times looks for in its cryptics.

We’ve recently been sharing recommendations of events involving puzzles and sundry cryptic activities. Most have involved solving; now it’s time for some setting.
As longtime solvers know, the Guardian setter John Halpern uses the name Paul rather than something fanciful as a tribute: Paul was John’s brother; he died aged 27. As another kind of tribute, Paul the setter is hosting a series of events over the next couple of months where famous faces create themed puzzles in real time and those of us looking on make a charitable donation.
Participants include Susan Tully, Will Shortz, Sophie Winkleman and Alastair Hignell … and also the comedians Rob Deering, Dave Gorman and Simon Evans. Let’s speak to the last of these, who has chosen the Lake District as his theme and Farms for City Children as his charity.
