For four years, I have been exploring Madagascar’s story. To begin with, I began gathering contacts and building up a little library. Everything I read was intriguing. Who knew, for example, that Malagasy widows who remarried were once stoned to death (on suspicion of sorcery)? Or that eager displays of sex were once common at Bara funerals?  The island’s literature was full of stuff like this. Marco Polo even introduced a little absurdity, describing birds big enough to scoop up an elephant.
