Ken Krause “You’ve never heard anything like this!” That was a common refrain in the early 1920s when the grand movie palaces across the country began to introduce audiences to a new musical invention: the theater pipe organ. A century later, the same may soon be said at the city of Medford’s historic Chevalier Theatre, where the installation of a 1922 Wurlitzer theater organ is approaching completion. The theater pipe organ was an early 1900s creation of a British inventor and telephone engineer, Robert Hope-Jones. He called his instrument a Unit Orchestra, because it was designed to imitate and sound of a full orchestra – some 300 instruments worth – at the hands (and feet) of just one person: the organist.

City leaders are combating a COVID-19 surge in Medford, where significant clusters of cases are tied to a large family gathering and a local restaurant. “Immediately after Thanksgiving, we saw our case counts surge, with more than 700 cases since Thanksgiving,” Public Health Director MaryAnn O’Connor wrote in an email to the Medford Transcript. “We remain concerned about informal gatherings, especially gatherings with family who do not live in the same household and continue to urge everyone to refrain from gathering with people outside their household, not to travel or have family from out of state visit, continue to wear masks, and practice social distancing.”

City officials last week approved a special tax plan that will bring an expected 250 jobs to Medford over the next 10 years. The Medford City Council on Dec. 8 approved Tax Increment Financing for Monogram Gourmet Foods to reopen the old Whole Foods Market, Inc., Bread & Circus Bakehouse, at 300 Middlesex Ave. as a wholesale supply facility. “We think this will be a great partnership for years,” Monogram Vice-President for Warehousing and Logistics Jeffrey Modica said. “This is a business we welcome with open arms,” added Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn, who proposed TIF at the Dec. 1 meeting, in which “municipalities may grant property tax exemptions to landowners of up to 100% of the tax increment for a fixed period,” according to the state Smart Growth/Smart Energy Toolkit.
