Washington Island student, Door County teachers win Kohl Foundation awards
MILWAUKEE - A Washington Island High School senior and two Door County teachers won awards from the Herb Kohl Foundation.
Julia Valentincic of Washington Island received a $10,000 Student Initiative Scholarship to be received upon graduation this spring; and Jessica Meacham, a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) teacher at Southern Door Elementary School in Brussels, and Lisa Mueller, a first-grade teacher at St. John Bosco Catholic School in Sturgeon Bay, each were named for a Teacher Fellowship by the foundation, which carries a $6,000 award.
The Student Initiative Scholarship is offered to 100 high schools in Wisconsin every seven years, with Washington Island being chosen for this year. Students in the Renfrew County Catholic District’s Madawaska area schools are sharing the joy of winter fun and warming their hearts with kindness and unconditional love.
At George Vanier Catholic School in Combermere, students and staff have been embracing the gift of winter by snowshoeing, constructing snow forts and building mazes. The outdoor learning continues even when the whiteboard markers freeze up, said Anne Marie Landon, principal.

“We are printing and drawing in the snow, counting snowballs and blue jays, and trying to figure out which tree our friend squirrel is living in,” she said.
