Netflix film Along for the Ride starts shooting at North Carolina beaches this week

(Port City Daily photo/Johanna Still) SOUTHEASTERN N.C. –– A Netflix feature film set in a “charming beach town” is slated to start rolling Wednesday in Carolina Beach, according to a film permit application Port City Daily obtained. The production is also planning to shoot scenes in Kure Beach, Wilmington and Oak Island through early June. An Apr. 13 presentation given by Night Owl Productions LLC to the town’s council confirmed more than half of the teen romance, “Along for the Ride,” is expected to film in Carolina Beach.

Leland and H2GO propose consolidation of services, assets after long legal battle

(Port City Daily photo/Johanna Still) LELAND The Town of Leland announced it is considering an agreement with Brunswick Regional Water and Sewer, better known as H2GO, to consolidate the utilities of the two water providers “[i]n the spirit of cooperation and unity.”  Since late 2017, the two have been involved in an often contentious, multi-million-dollar legal battle over H2GO’s assets in northern Brunswick County, which also involves the nearby town of Belville. Leland and Belville have fought over the rightful title to H2GO since the latter’s outgoing board members transferred all of its assets to Belville on Nov. 28, 2017.

Novant raises minimum wage to $15 for NHRMC employees

(Port City Daily/Johanna Still) NEW HANOVER COUNTY  Though votes to secure a raise in the minimum wage to $15 failed by 58 in the Senate two days ago (as part of the latest $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief bill), Novant is following through on its promise to employees of its newly acquired New Hanover Regional Medical Center. A hospital spokesperson announced the hospital increased employee pay to $15 per hour as of Feb. 21. “Healthy wages are not just a recruitment tool,” said John Gizdic, Novant Health executive vice president and chief business development officer, in a press release.

But with an ambitious goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050, Duke’s 11 nuclear-powered units at six plants in both North and South Carolina are in the news as the company announces it will pursue license renewals.
