“Stephen was an extraordinary collector he just lived and breathed the art from this period.” Those are the words Jodi Pollack, worldwide head of the 20th-century design department at Sotheby’s, uses when speaking by phone to AD PRO. But the specific man in question, who Pollack describes as being “beloved” throughout the industry, was not a world-famous scion or curatorial great. Instead, he was retired ophthalmologist named Dr. Stephen E. Kelly, who, later in his life, was able to more fully pursue his passion for purchasing Art Deco works.
Pieces from this renowned collection are up for auction at Sotheby’s this week, in a sale titled “A Celebration of Art Deco: Masterworks From the Collection of Dr. Stephen E. Kelly.” And while “masterworks” is indeed a fitting descriptor for the designs that filled Kelly’s Upper East Side townhouse, two lots in particular are especially worthy of that elusive label.
