This morning federal aviation officials are trying to determine the cause of a very close call at new Yorks Laguardia airport. A delta airliner skidded off the runway yesterday, and came within feet of plunging into an icy bay. Brian webb is at laguardia airport. Brian, good morning. Reporter good morning, lauren. There were 132 passengers on board flight 1086 yesterday. Snow was falling and visibility was low, and even under the best of conditions this airport leaves little room for error. Overnight crews moved the plane from the edge of flushing bay where the md88 had stopped just before plunging into the water. They had broken through the fence, and we were literally five to six feet away from the water. Reporter the passenger took this picture from his seat. Such [ bleep ] weather. We almost got friggin killed landing on the tarmac. Miguel marquez is live at laguardia and miles obrien is with me. He is also a pilot. Has the ntsb arrived net,yet, miguel . Reporter we understand they are on their way. It may have been the runway and the condition out there. Very cold temperatures and heavy snow throughout the day. Pilots are reporting throughout the day, investigator conditions on that runway. The Port Authority saying minutes before pilots were reporting that everything was okay. I can say that from everything we know at this point, that plane, when it hit the runway it lost control almost immediately and it hit that embankment about 4,000 feet down the 7,000foot runway. Its almost perpendicular to the runway with the nose, the cockpit of that airplane up over that embankment and hanging out over flushing bay. The landing gear ripped off the front.
