The decision to close the Sudocrem manufacturing plant in Baldoyle is âdevastating newsâ for the 110 affected employees and their families, the Tánaiste and Minister for Employment, Leo Varadkar, has said.
Mr Varadkar said his thoughts are with those whose jobs are to be cut by the end of 2022, as the company transfers its manufacturing operations to Bulgaria. âI know this must be an incredibly worrying time, especially given everything thatâs happened over the past year,â he added.
Mr Varadkar welcomed the commitment by Teva Pharmaceuticals, which has owned Sudocrem since 2016, to maintain a âstrong presenceâ in Ireland. The company said its respiratory manufacturing plant in Waterford will remain, as will its commercial activities. The Minister said he is also glad that Teva has said it will do everything it can to support employees of the north Dublin plant.
However, thankfully the woman was rescued by onlookers before the train left the platform.
She told Lunchtime Live that an increased Gardaí presence, as well as a radical introduction of curfews and an increased drinking age, could be useful in preventing similar incidents from occurring across the country. We have 40% fewer Guards in Ireland than the EU average, we need our Garda stations to open longer hours, she said. The fact that this particular incident, this most recent incident, happened right outside Malahide Garda station it would really kind of frighten you a little bit. What I d like to see is more dedicated community police, Guards that are consistently posted to one station, that they re out and about, they re visible, they re getting to know the kids and the parents and the community.
A Dublin councillor has called for ‘radical’ changes to the legal drinking age in Ireland to curb anti-social behaviour.
Social Democrats councillor for Howth and Malahide, Joan Hopkins said she would like to see Ireland follow in the footsteps of Iceland by raising the drinking age to 20.
The age issue was among a number of measures, including an increased Garda force and curfews, in a bid to lower the drinking age.

Cllr Hopkins made the suggestion following a shocking incident in Howth Junction DART Station, in which a woman fell under a train last month following an alleged incident of anti-social behaviour.
